Russell James Casemero of the Field Artillery entered the service in November, 1943, training at Camp Houze, Texas, in Infantry weapons. He was later stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. Casemero, the son of Antone P. and Mary Veronica (Madruga) Casmero of the Hanford district, attended Hanford Union High School.

Three of his brothers, Richard, Cyril and Joseph, also served in World War II. Richard was killed while serving in the Navy in the Southwest Pacific.

Russell James Casemero, Sr., 75, passed away February 6, 1998 at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, fisherman and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine and their five children, Russell Jr., Annette, Catherine, Beverly and Geraldine. He is also survived by two siblings, Betty and Joseph, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Tasha.

Born May 28, 1922 in Laton, California, Russell moved to San Diego in 1942, where he served in the Army at Fort Rosecrans, married, raised a family and had a career as a commercial tuna fisherman from 1946 until his retirement in 1995.

Note: Three spellings of the last name were used by this family, Casmero, Casemero and Casemiro.
