ATHOL – Alvin "Al" L. McGuirk, 79 of Athol, died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 in the Legend Center For Rehabilitation and Nursing, Gardner.


He was born in Athol, on January 30, 1930, the son of the late Patrick and the late Mary (McAdam) McGuirk.

He grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1947. He served in the Korean War from 1948 to 1952 in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. McGuirk owned a landscaping business for several years. He also worked at Rodney Hunt and the L.S. Starrett Company. He retired in 1984. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church and was a member of the Athol American Legion Post 102. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping. He often helped family and friends with landscaping at Gethsemane Cemetery.

He leaves: one brother: J. David McGuirk and his wife Grace of Fitchburg, four sister in-laws: Rose McGuirk, Margaret McGuirk, Jane McGuirk, and Elizabeth McGuirk all of Athol, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers: Reginald McGuirk, Louis McGuirk, Patrick McGuirk, John McGuirk and Charles McGuirk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. A calling hour will be held Friday from 9:30 -10:30 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to New England Hospice, 190 Old Derby Rd., Suite 304, Hingham, MA 02043.
