W. L. Abell Died Here Saturday
Well Known Stanberry Citizen Died at His Home Here Saturday, Following Four Strokes of Paralysis
W. L. Abell, well known Stanberry citizen, died at his home here at 8:26 o'clock Saturday night. His death came rapidly after he had sustained four strokes of paralysis last Wednesday. Mr. Abell had been in failing health for the past 2 1/2 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Abell moved from their farm, southeast of Stanberry, to town one year ago last April. They had continued to live here, but Mr. Abell's health did not improve. Following the strokes last Wednesday, he lapsed into unconsciousness lst Thursday morning at 5 o'clock and remained in a state of coma until his death.
The following obituary has been furnished this office:
Wilbert L. Abell, son of Homer and Cynthia Ann Abell, was born near St. Joseph, Mo., January 14, 1873, and died at his home in Stanberry, Mo., June 13, 1936, at the age of 63 years, four months and 29 days.
When less than a year old, he moved with his parents to Colorado, where he spent his boyhood and young manhood days. Afterwards he moved to California, where he resided for 17 years, with the exception of three years spent in Alaska.
While in California, Mr. Abell was employed in a saw mill camp in the wonderful redwood district. He followed this occupation until his return to Missouri in 1911.
Mr. Abell was married twice. His first wife was Mrs. Nora Cogdill Abell, with whom he was united in marriage in 1911. They lived together for four years, until her death in May, 1915.
He was united in marriage in January, 1920, with Mrs. Theo Butler Pierce, who survives him.
Besides his faithful wife there are left to mourn his departure, his aged mother, Mrs. Cynthia Ann Abell, of Buhl ID; one sister, Mrs. Mary McPherron, of Buhl; an aunt, Mrs. Frances Pettepier, of St. Joseph; an uncle, H. E. Harrington, of St. Joseph; two nieces, Mrs. Frances Whitby, of Berkeley CA, and Mrs. Nora McPherron of Twin Falls ID. There are also other relatives and a host of friends.
On account of failing health, Mr. and Mrs. Abell moved from the country to Stanberry a year ago last April.
Early in life, he united with the Christian church. In January, of this year, he united with the Baptist church of Stanberry. He was always deeply interested in all of the affairs of the church and was much loved by his pastor, the members and even the children of the congregation.
We shall miss him from the services but we believe that he has entered into that heavenly home, where there is no sorrow, no sickness, no disease, no death, the Rev. Bolton said.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. B. V. Bolton, pastor of the church and interment was in the High Ridge cemetery.
