Mr. Arbuthnot was married to Lois Little for 63 years who preceded him in death in 2009. Survivors include daughter Katherine and husband David Scharer of Humble, Texas, son John and wife Carlla of Baton Rouge, four grandsons, Christopher Scharer of Atlanta, Ga., Steven Scharer of Austin, TX, Thomas Arbuthnot and wife Katie of Lubbock, TX & Sgt. James Arbuthnot, US Marine Corps stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Two great grandsons, William & Walker Arbuthnot of Lubbock, TX also survive. Also surviving are brother George Stanley Arbuthnot of San Antonio, TX and sister Myrtis Arbuthnot of Pineville, La.
He was the son of Stanley Viers and Elizabeth Albritton Arbuthnot who preceded him in death along with brothers Howard & Bennett and sisters Annabelle & Oneta.
Dewitt enlisted in the US Navy and served briefly in the Army prior to WWII. He rejoined the Navy after Pearl Harbor serving aboard several destroyers and ammunition ships in the Pacific. In later years, he told many stories of his years in the Navy, ports he had visited and his exploits. In his working career he was part owner of Central Building Supply in Jonesville, La. and Jena Lumber Yard in Jena, La.
As a Christian he was a member and the eldest deacon at Pisgah Baptist Church in Manifest, Louisiana.
Uncle "D", Mr. Charles, Daddy, Grandpa, & Great Grandpa was an accomplished gardener and avid hunter. He owned many hunting dogs from Shorty to Chip. However, only one dog, Speck, was a house dog and provided much love and companionship during his reign over their home.
As we say good bye, we can only imagine him in heaven where he can again ride a tractor all day, talk to his cows, have plenty of rain for his garden, and perfect eyesight to see all the squirrel and deer in the Rosefield hills.
