JAMES LEO "JIM" BALLARD, 87, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 1:05 p.m. at Woodland Terrace Health Care Facility in Elizabethtown. He was born August 13, 1916 in Washington County; was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII; a partner in Ballard & Hamilton Construction Co. from 1948 until 1959; had a passion for golf and won the Lincoln Homestead Golf Tournament several times; was an avid hunter and fisherman; a trainer of championship bird dogs; a past member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church. Preceding him in death were a grandson, Richard Taylor, on April 3, 1992 and his parents, Thomas Emerson and Sara Margaret Auberry Ballard. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Leila Margaret Bean Ballard of Springfield; four sons, Jimmy (Sue) Ballard of Elizabethtown, Joe (Pina) Ballard of Danville, Bill (Dorothy) Ballard of Springfield and Dick (Dee) Ballard of Okeana, Ohio; five daughters, Tippy (Tom) Taylor of Shepherdsville, Margaret (Donnie) Polin of Elizabethtown, Lee (Sam) Wheatley of Bardstown, Susan "Bean" (Jerry) Osbourne and Brenda (Mack) Hiter, all of Springfield; one brother, Tom Ballard of Bardstown; one sister, Emily Chandler of Riner, Virginia; 33 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Springfield with Rev. James Murray, O.P. and Rev. Chris Allegra officiating. Burial was in St. Dominic-Holy Rosary Cemetery in Springfield. Pallbearers were John Taylor, Jim Taylor, Ben Taylor, Jamie Polin, Rick Polin and Shawn Wheatley. Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren. Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield was in charge of the arrangements.
