Colonel Edmund Burritt, Sr. was a son of Lt. Colonel Stephen Burritt, Sr. and Martha (Stevens) Burritt of Burritt's Rapids, Ontario and the brother of Stephen Burritt, Jr. (who passed away quite young) and Lt. Colonel Henry "Harry" Burritt.

During the War of 1812, he served as an ensign in the 2nd Regiment of Grenville Militia. Post-war, he became a colonel in the Upper Canadian Militia.
