When Brearley had about 100 volunteers, he led the Marshall County/Putnam County company into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Brearley and 88 of his volunteers, including now Private Zenas C. Worley, were mustered into service as Co. B of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Brearley was elected Captain of Co. B.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana, which was located on the Ohio River opposite Louisville, Kentucky. On September 14, 1862, the 86th left Camp Joe Holt, crossed over the Ohio River, where they went into camp at Camp Louisville, which is today located on the campus of the University of Louisville, where one of Zenas' great grandsons, Mike Worley, is employed. There in Louisville, the 85th & 86th, along with the 125th Illinois and the 52nd Ohio were organized into the 36th Brigade. This Brigade was commanded by Colonel Daniel McCook, of the Fighting McCooks. Two weeks later, McCook's Brigade was in the field in Kentucky as part of Union General Don Carlos Buell's Army in pursuit of Confederate troops under the command of Confederate General Braxton Bragg. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they would go into winter camp.
On February 1, 1863, the men of the 86th Illinois elected Zenas C. Worley to fill a vacancy among the Corporal positions. Eventually, McCook's Brigade was assigned as the 3rd Brigade, of the 2nd Division, of the 14th Army Corps. During the next two and a half years, Corporal Zenas C. Worley would serve faithfully in Co. B as the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Zenas was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia and Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasborough, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina and marched with Sherman on his infamous "March to the Sea." During the "March to the Sea", the 3rd Brigade was commanded by Colonel James W. Langley, of the 125th Illinois, Colonel Daniel W. McCook having been killed during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. It must be noted here that General William Tecumseh Sherman personally accompanied the 14th Corps, which was commanded by Brevet Major General Jefferson C. Davis, during most of the "March to the Sea."
After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where in May, the marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on the 2nd day of the Grand Review.
