Samuel and wife Hannah were of Berkshire County, Massachusetts, settled in Canton township in 1804. He and his wife were among the first settlers of the Canton area, coming here shortly after the Revolutionary War in which Samuel served. He was described by his son as being a "stern and forbidding figure." However others who read of his diaries described him as a loving and caring father and one who also cared a great deal for his friends and neighbors, and his community. It was discovered that he was the writer of many of the obituaries for the area, a chronicler of news and church `goings on' for the newspapers, etc.; and a man deeply involved in community affairs. He was a teacher; provisional teaching certificates for the years 1862 and 1868 showing him to be qualified to teach Orthography (spelling), reading, writing, mental arithmetic, written arithmetic, geography, grammar, teaching, practice of teaching, theory of teaching. He was a farmer, caretaker of roads, and inventerate church goer and grange member.
BURIAL: Glenwood Cemetery records.

!"Samuel Rockwell, born at Ridgefield, Connecticut, 28 Oct 1764; a farmer and miller; went in childhood with his parents to Lanesborough, Massachusetts, where he married, about 1785, Hannah Lasell, who was born at Lanesborough in 1767. They dwelt at Lanesborough, at Cornwall, Vermont, at Shoreham, Vermont, and at Crown Point, New York, finally settling, in 1804, at Troy, Pennsylvania, where she died, 17 Jan 1819... He married (2d), about 1820, a widow Bothwell, who died at Canton, Pennsylvania, about 1872. He died there (Canton) 24 July 1848...and was buried at Troy. His descendants, in 1847, numbered 141, of whom 113 met at Canton, 25 Aug 1847, for a visit to the homestead. The Bradford Reporter of 25 Sep 1847 contained an interesting account of the gathering."
