Nathaniel was the son of Nathan and Elizabeth (Foster) Safford He was a shoemaker and trader. He is referred to as "Jr." in some historical documents; however, he is not a true "Jr." because is middle name differs from his father's middle name.
Nathaniel married Sally Smith on Dec. 8, 1808 in Gloucester, Essex Cty, Mass. She died on 20 Mar 1810 at age 20. He second married Hannah Woodbury on 10 Oct 1813. He died of consumption at age 61. All in Salem.
