C. A. HOWARD DEAD

Relatives and friends were greatly shocked by the news of the sudden death of Mr. C. A. (Bert) Howard, which occurred at his home in Chariton on Tuesday morning, following a stoke of paralysis. He was assisting some carpenters in some work about his home when he suddenly fell to the floor and passed away immediately.

About a year ago he suffered a stroke, and since that time, although his health has not been of the best, he was able to be about. While his death was not unexpected, it came as a great shock to his family and friends.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. Alfred Mill, of this place, assisted by Rev. Pontius, of Corydon, were held at the Christian church on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and bore testimony to the high esteem in which deceased was held.

C. A., son of C. W. and Ellen Howard, was born in Putnam county, Missouri, on August 29, 1866, and departed this life October 8, 1929, at the age of 63 years, 1 month and 8 days. At the age of twenty-one he came to Chariton, Iowa, where he attended Mrs. Stewart's academy, after which he taught in the rural schools for a number of years.

On July 4, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Alma Sams. To this union eight children were born, one of whom, Carl, died in infancy. His wife passed away on September 20, 1919, and on September 1, 1923, he was again married to Mrs. Alice H. Flynn, of Chariton.

He was a member of the Christian church for many years and for several years served as an elder. He took an active part in church affairs and lived a faithful, consistent Christian life.

For seventeen years he served as a rural mail carrier until compelled by ill health to discontinue his work.

He is survived by seven children, Lawrence, of Red Oak; Leland, of Richmond, Virginia; Mrs. Edna Stevenson, Theo and Miss Mildred Howard, all of Des Moines; Floyd of Weldon; and Ted Howard, of Chariton; and two step-daughters, Miss Elizabeth Flynn and Mrs. Frances Jack, all of whom were present at the last sad rites. He also leaves ten brothers and sisters and seven grandchildren.

His death is deplored by a host of friends whom he had won during his long residence here by his genial manners and upright living, and the sympathy of the entire community will be extended to the grief stricken ones.
