From the Grayson Gazette
Independence, Va.
June 21st, 1918

Roscoe Byrd died at his home near Providence church last Sunday and was buried Monday at Providence Cemetery. It will be remembered that Mr. Byrd was accidentally shot last winter at Norfolk, Va., in such a manner that left both eyes were blinded. He never fully recovered from the shock and last week he developed something like blood poison in his throat and chest which resulted in his death Sunday (June 16th, 1918).
Mr. Byrd was a good man and well liked by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and four small children to mourn his loss. He was the commanding officer of the Providence Lodge of Odd Fellows and was buried under the auspices of this Order Rev. Mayberry, his pastor, having the service in charge. Despite the heavy rain storm Monday there were a large number of people at the funeral to pay their respects to the beautiful Christian character which this man exemplified in his daily life.
