Lucille Breaux Monceaux Atkinson, 86, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010, in a local hospital.
She was born November 13, 1923 in the country near Rayne to Frank and Delicia Badeaux Breaux. She was the second of eight siblings. She attended school in Rayne and Indian Bayou. She and her first husband moved to Sulphur in 1956 and operated several businesses in Sulphur until she was widowed at age 39. She remarried and moved to Carlyss where she was very involved with the St. Theresa Ladies Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters. She was always there to make pies and chicken fricassee dinners and helped out during the Bon Ton Festival. She moved to High Hope Care Center in 2006.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lawrence Monceaux; her second husband, Francis Atkinson; her brothers, Raymond, Howard, and Danice Breaux; her sisters, Agnes Leger, LaLa Terro, and Emily Abshire; and a step-daughter, Donna Lyons. She is survived by her sister, Nell Guidry of Rayne; her son, Percy Monceaux and wife, Dottie of Carlyss; her daughters, Delores Monceaux Boudreaux of Carlyss, Alice Monceaux Maffay of Texas City, Texas, and Connie Atkinson of Sulphur; her step-daughter, Sharon; her grandchildren, Chelsea Boudreaux Hardin, Zach Boudreaux, Brandon Monceaux, Amanda Monceaux Yellott, Keith Welch, Brad Welch, Maranda Drake Alleman, Casey Drake, Timmy Drake, Syndi Brown, Mitchell Williams, Anja Richard, and Courtney Stein; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 29, in St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss. The Rev. Thomas Vellappallil will officate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. Thursday with a rosary service at 7 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
The family wishes to thank the staff of High Hope Care Center for the way that they treated Momma as their mother and grandmother. Momma often said how lucky she felt that she was in a place where she didn't have to do dishes, dusting, mopping, or even folding clothes. She felt very blessed and we did too. Special thanks also to the nursing home ministry at St. John Bosco in Westlake, surely their rewards await them in heaven. We would also like to thank the E.R. staff at Cal-Cam Hospital. They were the best we could have asked for because of their sensitivity and caring way and made an unbearable situation easier. Lucille T Atkinson
