Faith Ripley, dau. of Joshua Ripley, Esq. & Hannah Bradford, b. Sept. 20, 1686 at Hingham, Mass.[*1] She d. at Windham, Conn. Feb. 11, 1720/1, not Feb. 20, 1720 as some otherwise claim, Æ 35. The Windham town record says she died on Feb. 11, "1720/21" the day after giving birth to dau. Marah, b. of record Feb. 10, "1720/21." The more recent footstone in front of her original gravestone uses the modern Gregorian versus pre-1752 Julian calendar in stating the year of her death, and is consistent with the town record regardless of which calendar one chooses to use.

On Jan. 5, 1707/8, Faith m. as his first wife Capt. Samuel Bingham, s. of Dea. Thomas Bingham & Mary Rudd. He was b. of record Mar. 28, 1685 at Norwich, Conn. After Faith's death, Samuel m. 2) Nov. 23, 1721 at Windham, Conn., Elizabeth Manning, dau. of Samuel Manning & Deborah Spaulding, b. Nov. 21, 1701 at Cambridge, Mass. Capt. Bingham d. Mar. 1, 1760 at Windham, Conn., Æ 75, and 2nd wife Elizabeth at Windham on Mar. 27, 1780, Æ 79.

Faith Ripley and Samuel Bingham had the following five children b. of record at Windham, Conn.:

• i. Jerusha Bingham, b. Feb. 2, 1708/9, d. May 4, 1776 at either Stafford or adjoining Willington, Conn., Æ 68; m. Mar. 4, 1728/9 at Windham, Conn., Benjamin Robinson, s. of Peter Robinson & Experience Lumbert, b. Feb. 23, 1703/4 at Tisbury, Mass. He d. Apr. 12, 1772 at Stafford, Conn., Æ 69. Seven children of the family.

• ii. Abisha Bingham, b. Jan. 29, 1709/10; m. Dec. 28, 1731 as "Abithai Bingham of Windham," Mary Tubbs at Lyme, Conn. [Lyme 1st Chh. Rec.], dau. of Isaac Tubbs, b. Apr. 2, 1710 at Lyme. Seven purported children of the family at Windham, none of whose births are recorded in the Windham town records. Abisha and wife Mary's deaths are also not of record at Windham.

• iii. Lemuel Bingham, b. Sept. 20, 1713, d. at Windham Nov. 3, 1788, Æ 76; m. Apr. 28, 1737 at Windham, Hannah Perkins, who d. Oct. 21, 1793 at Windham. Seven children of the family.

• iv. Anne Bingham, b. Nov. 1716 (day missing); she is prob. the Ann Bingham who m. May 3, 1739 at Windham, Samuel Folsom, s. of Israel Folsom & Rachel Berry, b. Mar. 20, 1716 at Stafford, Conn. Eleven children of the family. The first two children are recorded at Windham, then repeated with the rest of the children at Stafford, Conn.

• v. Marah Bingham, b. Feb. 10, 1720/1 and d. as an infant Feb. 22, 1726/7.

[*1] Faith is erroneously called Judith in the original handwritten manuscript of Rev. Peter Hobart, born in Sept. 1686, the day not entered. There was no separate child named Judith and in 1686 female children did not have double or middle names. Regardless of where born, all of the children of Joshua and Hannah (Bradford) Ripley are recorded in the Windham, Conn. town records with Faith, "daughter of Joshua and Hannah, b. Sept. 20, 1686, at Hingham" (Wind. VRs, p. 206). A transcription of Hobart's Journal was printed in NEHGS Register 121:270 and added details not found in the original handwritten copy of Hobart's Journal. Notwithstanding, in the original journal the immediate preceding entry is for the Sept. 6, 1686 birth of Mary Gill, daughter of Samuel. The modern transcription of the journal inserted a Sept. 11, 1686 baptism between Mary Gill and "Judith" Ripley whereas the 1893 History of the Town of Hingham miscopied the erroneously named "Judith" as born in "Oct. 1686." Still further, the date Sept. 20, 1686 has been attributed to Faith as the date of her baptism at Windham, Conn. The town of Windham did not exist in 1686 as the first organizing town meeting was not held until May 18, 1691 with Windham not legally a town until approved by the Connecticut Assembly on May 12, 1692 [Conn. Colony Public Records, 4:67]. There are no surviving church records for the Windham First Church prior to the year 1700 and no surviving baptism records of children at that church until after 1720. There also are no surviving church records at Norwich, Conn. prior to the year 1699, where the Joshua Ripley family first resided before finally settling at Windham.
