Samuel S. Bates was a veteran of World War I.

For 22 years, he was in business with R.L. Cornish in the Shamrock Motor Company in Graham with the first Chevrolet dealership. Later, the group had the Dodge dealership.

Samuel S. Bates lived in Graham until 1943 when he moved to Lubbock and went into the Real Estate business.

He was a Charter member of Graham Rotary Club. Sam Bates served as Chairman of the board for the committee that built the Young County Memorial Auditorium in Graham, Texas. Sam Bates was active in civic and church work. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce for two years. He was charter member of the American Legion Post 34. He was a Shriner and a 32nd degree Mason. Sam Bates was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survived by his wife; two daughters - Mrs. Allen Wemple and Mrs. Wayne Bain; two sons - Sam S. Bates, Jr. and Jack Bates; 17 grandchildren; four sisters; one brother - J.E. Bates.
