Newton Wilson "Woody" Baldwin, age 82, died as a result of an automobile accident 9 miles south of Raton NM on August 25, 1983. He was born in Mize Miss.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Verbeck Baldwin (Married August 25, 1966 in Portales NM) and one son Newton Eddie Baldwin of the home in Springer NM; 3 daughters: Johnnie Marie (husband George) Smith of Trinity Texas (from his first wife Sally); Joyce Hogsett (husband Frank) of Littleton Colorado and Gloria Holland of Anchorage Alaska (from his second wife Golda); nine nephews, six nieces and numerous other relatives.

Woody is preceded in death by his parents Dan Newton and Christine Ann Fletcher, Sisters Callie Tillson and Lela Virginia Campbell and two brothers Joe J. and William Wallace Baldwin.

After moving to New Mexico from Hubbard TX Woody was employed as a plumber at the Dawson coal mines in northeastern NM. When the Dawson mines closed Woody was hired on at the Philmont Scout Ranch outside of Cimarron NM. Here he worked along side Waite Phillips (the current owner of Philmont) and enjoyed square dancing with his second wife, Golda. Golda and their daughters Joyce and Gloria started the Spouse program of the Philmont training Center while Woody was the head of maintenance and the plumber and electrician at the ranch. After retiring from Philmont Woody moved to Ute Park NM and started his own plumbing business (Baldwin Plumbing) and ran the business along side his third wife Charlene until his retirement at age 80.

Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ in Springer NM Sunday August 28 with the reverend Ken Westfall and reverend Randy Hilburn officiating. Pallbearers were Clarence Odis "Butch" Hoskins, James B "Mitch" Mitchell, Tommy Salazar, Alfred Hoskins, Bill Hancock and Clarence "Odis" Hoskins III. Burial was in the Springer NM Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Errington Memorial Chapel in Raton NM.
