Samuel lived in Erie and Mercer counties many years and in 1851 moved to Knox County, Illinois, where he spent ten years. His wife died there in 1856, and he then located in Lyons County, Kansas. He moved to Cowley County in 1877, and died in the county February 1881. He was a lifelong farmer.
Fifteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mecham: William (b Mar 15, 1820) and lived in Illinois; Mary (b Jun 5, 1821); Moses (b July 14, 1824) was a Baptist preacher in Nebraska; Edward (b Jan 12, 1826) died in the Mexican War; Harriet (b Mar 27, 1828); Sarah (married George Walker July 3, 1851 and settled in Cowley County, KS); James (b Feb 26, 1832) lived in Topeka, Kansas; Cornelius (b Oct 18, 1833) lived in Idaho; Samuel (b Sep 7, 1836) a minister in Missouri; Phylinda (b Aug 22, 1840) who was a resident of Michigan; Gerry, deceased; Perry Geer (b May 12, 1844) deceased; Hannah (b April 19, 1842, d Dec 1899); Elizabeth (b Nov 26, 1845, d 1855 at age ten years); and Joel (b May 8, 1848) died in infancy.
