The son of Stephan Schmidt and Mary Schmalzer, John married Rosalia Koenze about 1907 in Hungary. They were the parents of 4 children.

Rosalia died on 03 May 1914 from tuberculosis.

Children from first marriage: 4 daughters.

Newly widowed, John married Mrs. Apolonia (nee Horschuetz) Geringer. She, also, had just lost her spouse and was a widow with 4 sons of her own.

Apolonia and John wed about 1914 in St. Louis. After their marriage, they became the parents of at least 11 more children. John worked as a cabinet worker.

Children from second marriage: 4 step-sons, 3 sons, 8 daughters.

John died from heart disease, pneumonia and diabetes in 1941. At the time of his death, he was 54 years, 6 months and 22 days old. He was buried on 09 Jul 1941 next to 3 of his children who preceded him in death--Rosa Bertha, Helen and Anthony.

His wife, Apolonia, passed away in 1971.
