Byron L. Bondurant, 84, of Soldotna, Alaska, formerly of Waynesfield, died at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 24, 2010, at The Friendship Village, Columbus.
He was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Lima to Earl Smith and Joy Konetz Gesler Bondurant, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 28, 1944, in Waynesfield, he married Lovetta "Betty" Alexander, who survives.
Mr. Bondurant was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University, received his master's degree from the University of Connecticut and studied for his doctorate at Purdue University. He worked in Sierra Leone for the Peace Corps, in Somalia for the United Nations and in India for the Ford Foundation and USAID. He had been a professor at the University of Connecticut and the University of Delaware and was the department head of Agricultural Engineering in Maine. He had also lived in Wapakoneta.
Survivors also include two daughters, Connie Jane Jaycox, of Columbus, and Cindy Lynn (Bill) Oxyer, of Mechanicsburg; a son, Richard Thayne (Brenda Jane) Bondurant, of Corinth, Vt.; and four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Don, Sherwood, Dale and Robert; and an infant son, Alan Clay Bondurant, who was stillborn.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Myron Van Horn Chapel of Sanford-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview. Burial will be in Willow Branch Cemetery, Waynesfield, where graveside services will be held for his brothers, Dale and Robert, in conjunction with his.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
