Doris M. Cass Services Dec. 18
Doris Mae Chaffin Cass was born July 17, 1916 near Franklin, Nebraska to Orin and Edith L. Chaffin and died December 14, 1987 at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
She completed her elementary education and graduated from the Burwell High School in 1934. She taught school for one year after her graduation. She married Donald Ray (Spud) Cass on December 27, 1934 at Wahoo.
Doris and Don started the D.R. Cass Earthmoving Construction Company in 1948. After Don's death she incorporated the business and it became known as Cass Construction Company. She remained active in the business until her retirement. She was an active member of the Methodist Church, a treasurer of the church and the Women's Society. Doris was a member of the American Legion Aux., the Rodeo Board, Doric Chapter #64, Order of the Eastern Star. In 1976 she was named Mrs. Conservation Contractor of the Year by the Nebraska Land Improvement Contractors Assn.
Survivors include her mother, Edith Chaffin; daughter, Marilyn Hoffa of Lakewood, CO, Shirley Starkey of Yuma, AZ and Linda Pelton of Boulder City, NV; a sister Lois Howart; brothers, Leland Chaffin, Jerald Chaffin, both of Burwell, Les Chaffin of Norfolk and Gerald Chaffin of Lincoln; a son-in-law, Charlie Dearmont of Elyria, thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, husband and one daughter.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 18, 1987 at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. Burial was in the Cottonwood Cemetery.
