John Quitman was born in Louisiana, he was only a year old when his father died. By 1874 the family removed to Panola County,Texas. He married Texana Ida Parker in 1890. Three of his four children were born in Carthage, Texas. About 1896 he took his family toward Indian Territory which later became Oklahoma, where his fourth child was born. John Quitman died in Montague County, Texas in 1898. The brother of Texana took the family back to Carthage in a wagon. JQ was buried in Belcherville Cemetery next to a niece and a nephew who had died a year earlier. The grave stone was upright in 2002, but on return in 2005 to photograph the stone, it had been broken and the piece was laying near.
