Born in Town Russell near Elkhart Lake, to Peter Sinz and Magdalena Helena (Caspar) Sinz. Her father moved the family to Glenbeulah where he built a hotel. It burned in 1871 but was rebuilt. Mary and her sisters and brothers had a very religious upbringing and at the same time, their parents made sure they attended schools where English would be spoken and not German as was the practice at a number of the local schools.
Mary gave birth to daughters Bertha and Meta, and a son Robert. Bertha taught school and married machinist and WWI veteran Fred C Voigt, Meta married Univ of Wis college professor Jesse Kommers, and Robert became a Georgetown Univ law professor and DC Sup't of Schools.
