DEATH OF GEO. D. BEERS

A telegram was received here this morning from Brooklyn announcing the death of George D. Beers. The event has been expected for some time, and although the news causes considerable comment on the street, for the deceased was a prominent man, it occasioned no surprise.

Mr. Beers was born June 10, 1812, in Hobart, Delaware co., and came to Ithaca when he was seven years of age. He entered West Point and after spending only one year in that institution went to Union College, from which in due course of time he was graduated with considerable honor. He chose the legal profession and read with Genl. Matthews, of Rochester, for a while and afterwards with the renowned Ben Johnson of this village.

As nearly all of our citizens are aware, he prospered wonderfully as far as the accumulation of wealth was concerned and he dies worth from four to six hundred thousand dollars, a large proportion of the property being in the shape of farms in this and other states. A large amount of his property is situated in New Jersey, and for years it was his well-known custom to spent summers there. It was while in New Jersey that his esteemed wife contracted a malarial disease that proved fatal; and it was there too while sojourning this past summer with his new wife, that he was smitten with the malady that has closed his career.

Mr. Beers has always been regarded as one of our shrewdest business men, as no doubt many a farmer is able to testify. It has never been said that he attempted to thrive by unfair means, but any man who had occasion to deal with him needed to have his eye teeth cut.

He affected a quaint attire and it will be long before our citizens will forget his appearance on the street as he leisurely strolled along with his hands under the tails of his old-fashioned swallow-tailed brass-buttoned coat. His health has ever been robust, and looking at his well-developed thick-set figure one would have predicted a much longer lease on life than his sixty-eight years.

The dispatch announcing his demise stated that the remains would be brought here for burial and that the funeral will take place on Thursday, the 14th inst.
