James Madison Armstrong, Jr., age 91, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Hospice of West Alabama. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Charles M. Durham officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Nell Spinks Armstrong; his mother, Sadie Richardson Armstrong; his father, James Madison Armstrong, Sr.; his stepmother, Rose Price Armstrong; and his brothers, William Price Armstrong, Sr. and Thomas Harold Armstrong, Jr.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Armstrong Ellis (George) of Pascagoula; his sister-in-law, Bobbie Ann Armstrong of Fairhope; his daughters, Kaye A. Kennedy (H.E.) of Bon Secour, Judith A. Boswell of Montgomery, and Libbie A. Thomas (Elmer) of Vernon; his grandchildren, William A. Manders (Susy) of Mobile, Missy M. Thompson (Ormand) of Daphne, Angie Manders of Bon Secour, C. Ford Boswell, Jr. (Rebekah) of Birmingham, James C. Boswell (Lisa Frazer) of Denver, Meredith B. Bishop (Kenneth) of Montgomery, and Julie T. Koukos (Thomas) of Huntsville; his eight great-grandchildren; and close family members, Margaret S. and Calvin Hannah, Tony Hope, and Deborah Ashworth, all of Tuscaloosa.

Jim was born Feb. 26, 1918 in Orange, Texas. His father's employment with Gulf States Paper brought the family to Tuscaloosa in 1928. After graduating from Tuscaloosa High School, Jim attended the University of Alabama, graduating in January 1940 with a B.S. degree in Commerce and Business Administration. While at the University of Alabama, he was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha social fraternity and Delta Sigma Pi professional fraternity, and served in the Alabama National Guard all while working full-time at Gulf States.

Jim served in the United States Navy during World War II Pacific Campaign. After his discharge in 1946, he served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1953 to 1979, achieving the rank of Lt. Commander and retiring in 1979 after 31 years of military service.

Jim began his career in personnel management at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. After being discharged from the Navy at the end of World War II, he continued his career in personnel management at the VA Hospital of Tuscaloosa. In 1947, he returned to Gulf States to work in personnel management and labor relations. Throughout his life, Jim was involved in many civic and social organizations with his special interests in Toastmasters International, Junior Achievement, and Boy Scouts of America. After serving as Director of Personnel and Labor Relations for Southland Oil Co. in Jackson, Miss. for 17 years, Jim retired in 1983.

After his retirement, Jim and Nell returned to Tuscaloosa in 1994. They spent their retirement years traveling, following University of Alabama sports, and spending time with their family.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Fellowship Class of the First Presbyterian Church, Sandy and Mike Stilson, Lorraine Hayslip, Louise Fincher, Peggy McCarroll, Dr. Melanie Graham, and staff of DCH Cancer Center, nurses and staff of Hospice of West Alabama, Fay and Frank Hydrick, neighbors of Ashbrook, and Jim's special friend and physician, Reginald Motley, M.D.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the spiritual comfort and support of Dr. Charles Durham, Rev. Lou Ann Sellers, Rev. James Goodlet, and Rev. Patrick Laney.
