Calvert Spensley of Mineral Point, has occupied for a number of years a position of prominence in legal and political circles second to none in this section or Wisconsin. He was born Jan 2, 1846, at Stockton on the Tees, in the County of Durham, England, where the name of Spensley had been a familiar one for two centuries. Calvert Spensley was sent to district school in Shullsburg, the Mineral Point Seminary and high school, attended a military academy at Fulton, Ill., the Eastman Business College, at Poughdeepsie, N.Y., and the Columbia Law School of New York City. From the last institution he was graduated in 1869. In 1864, Mr. Spensley enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Fortieth Illinois infantry. He became second sergeant of his company and served until Nov. 14, 1865, when he was honorably discharged from the service, having suffered no wounds or illness sufficient for absence from duty in hospital. He is past commander of the George H. Leggett Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, of Mineral Point. After the completion of his course in the Poughdeepsie Business College, Mr. Spensley entered the mercantile establishment of Joseph Gundry, of Mineral Point, as clerk, but left this position to study law in the office of Cotheren & Lanyon, where so many noted lawyers received their early training. Upon his graduation from Columbia, Mr. Spensley became a member of this well known firm, with which he was associated until 1871, when he was appointed auditor of the Mineral Point railroad, which post he occupied until 1877. At this time he again became associated with Cyrus Lanyon, under the firm name of Lanyon & Spensley, and was also attorney for the Mineral Point railroad. In September, 1886, the legal partnership of Spensley and McIlhon & Priestley, by the admission of T.M.Priestley. Mr. Spensley is a consistent Republican in political affiliations, and has taken an active and prominent part in political affairs. He is president of the Wisconsin fish commission, has served as supervisor on the Iowa county board and as chairman of that body; he has been elected mayor of Mineral Point and State senator from that district, and has also taken a prominent place in many undertakings of a local public nature. He has been identified with the Southwestern Wisconsin Industrial Association, president of the Graceland Cemetery Association, president of the Iowa County Soldiers' Relief Association, etc. His business interests have been varied and important; he has been actively interested in mining in the district and is the owner of large interests in some of the best known mines; he is president of the Mineral Point Telephone Company, and of the First National Bank of Mineral Point. His home in the south part of the city, situated on a commanding eminence, is one of the handsomest residences in Mineral Point, and is surrounded by well kept lawns and gardens. In the latter Mr. Spensley tales an especial interest. Oct. 13, 1869, Mr. Spensley was united in marriage to Miss Clara J. Cobb, of Mineral Point. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Spensley: Harker G.,manager of the General Confectionery Company, with offices in Chicago; Calvert Frederick, born 1872, died 1908, having been a practicing attorney of Madison, Wis; Ruth Antoinette, born Feb. 4, 1881, wife of John L. Lightborn, of Bermuda Island. Mr. Spensley is an enthusiastic member of the Masonic order, has been grand high priest and has held all the offices in the blue lodge, chapter and commandery. He is a man of exceptionally keen intellect, an eloquent public speaker, and the possessor of the physical qualities essential to accomplishment of large undertaking. His legal attainments entitle him to a high place in that profession and have won him a wide spread and distinguished reputation.
