Per his obituary, he was the first sheriff of St. Louis County.

Native of St. Louis and a veteran of the Mexican War. His father came to St. Louis from Ireland in 1819, traveling with his wife and 2 children in a wagon from Richmond, VA. Four other children were born after the family arrived in St. Louis.

Through inheritance from his father, he owned land - "much of the best business property in Wellson and the suburb of Hillsdale, and large tracts of farm land in St. Louis County.

He leaves a widow - Isidora Brown
