NOTE There is so much wrong with this death certificate. Sam Shannon was a son-in-law of Jefferson Toler and certainly knew him but apparently did not talk about personal lives. He did the best he could at trying to fill in the questions but sometimes that disappointing "Unknown" is a better response.

--------
Jefferson Toler's mother, Tempe Screech (AKA Creech) m.4 May 1840 Crawford Co., IN, to Adam Summatoler (per marriage record) on oath of Tempe's brother Joseph Screech. The Summatoler name has never been found and on the 1850 census and thereafter, the name of Toler was used. There were Tolers in Crawford Co., Indiana, but Adam Toler's identity or if connected to them has not been discovered nor any what, when or where of his disappearance from records.

Below is not all of the documentation available on E. Jefferson Toler but an overview to prove him and his timeline:

* The 1850 census of Clay Co., Indiana, gives Elilia or Elitia, Female, 10 IN. Elisha's mother is apparently widowed and the family is living among her family members.

* Illinois Civil War Draft Registration, Dist. 8, Sangamon Co., June 1863 lists Elisha Toler, 27 yrs, farmer, married, born Indiana, residence Illiopolis.

* 1870 census Jefferson gave his age as 28 yrs

* The October 14, 1878 Birth Registry for a daughter born in Macon Co., Illinois:
Father E. Jefferson Toler, 39 yrs old, born Indiana, occup. Plasterer

* The Review, Decatur, IL, Tuesday, November 10, 1885
Early Sunday morning Jeff Toler, the fiddler, was struck by a Wabash freight train while near the fair ground. He was knocked violently to the ground and afterwards picked up by the train men and brought to the city. Two of his ribs were broken, and he was slightly injured in the hip, but he will recover in a few weeks.

* 1889 Fort Wayne, Indiana, City Directory
Toler, Elisha; plasterer; res. w s Lafayette cor Piqua av

The Tolers went to Allen County, Indiana, from Macon County, Illinois between 1886-1888 (city directory data was collected a year in advance of publishing) between the marriage of a daughter Jan 1886 Illinois followed by the birth of a child Mar 1888 Indiana.

* Jefferson Toler was fairly consistent with a birth year of ca. 1839. His parents were married May 1840 so it seems more likely he was born April 1841 unless he was not born a Toler and took the stepfather's name. NO PROOF either direction has been located but perhaps some day a DNA result will solve the question.
