Mary Evelyn Cavett, resident of Ponca City, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS. She was 86.

The service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 25, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at Trout Funeral Home on Sunday, January 24, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mary was born on May 8, 1923 in Blackwell, OK, the daughter of John William and Naomi (Neese) Garwood. She grew up on a dairy farm in Blackwell. Mary attended the Blackwell schools and graduated in 1941. She then attended Central State College in Edmond where she graduated in 1945 with a degree in Elementary Education. She began her 30 years of teaching in Perry, OK. Mary met Owen Cavett in college and they were married in her parent's home on August 4, 1946.

Mary and Owen started their married life teaching in Orlando, OK and they also lived and taught in Lamont and Blackwell before moving to Ponca City in 1966 with their two sons. Mary retired in 1982 from Woodlands Elementary School. In 1993 Owen and Mary moved into an apartment at Westminster Village where they enjoyed many active years there before Owen's death on November 13, 2000. Mary continued living at Westminster until her death.

Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ponca City and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, United Methodist Woman, Deborah Circle and played in the Silver Bells Handbell Choir.

Mary's hobbies were music, reading and crocheting. She also helped with music in the Methodist Churches that she belonged to over the years by singing in the choir and playing the piano for Sunday school classes. Mary played the piano for Westminster Chapel Services, family gatherings, and for her husband Owen. For many years she delivered Upper Room devotionals to church members living at Westminster.

Mary is survived by two sons and their wives; one brother; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Owen; brothers: Irvin Garwood and Vernon Garwood; two sisters: Violet Carter and Edna Constant, and two infant sisters.
