Adam Bell was born in Bally Gally Bally Ray to parents, Atchinson (Atkinson) Bell and Adelia (Delia) Bell. At age 17, he departed Liverpool and came to America on the ship, Andrew Foster, Line 38, arriving New York on 23 April 1856 accompanied by his two sisters, Sara and Elspie Bell. He enlisted (perhaps was pressed into) the Union Army at Cincinatti on 14 September 1861. He suffered a hand injury for which he received a Civil War pension. He was discharged at Columbia, Tennessee on 20 October 1864.

He came to the Jefferson County, Mississippi, area where he met and married Eliza Carothers, daughter of William P. Carothers and Ellenda (Ellen) Sharbert, on 3 December 1867. They resided in and raised their children in Harriston, Jefferson County.

Adam and Eliza had eight children: Anna Lucille (1868-1906), Thomas (1870-1906), Mary Jane "Molly" (1872-1948), Margaret (Maggie) (1875), James A. (1876), Adelia "Dee" (1879-1949), Sarah "Sally" (1881-1946), Elspia Agnes "Epp" (1882-1973).
