Etienne Olivier 'Oliver' Cratte (Crête) Sr. is the son of Etienne Crête and Brigitte Labbe. He was baptized on November 20, 1801 at Pointe-du-Lac, Quebec, Canada. His mother died in 1805 when he was 4 years old and he and his sister Brigitte, were brought up by one of his mother's brothers by the name of Labbé. He was trained in Montreal as a blacksmith.

At the age of 23, he left Quebec to go west. He was hired by the American Fur Company for $700 per year plus room and board. He built traps and other tools at Prairie du Chien, WI.

In 1829, Oliver was hired by the United States Government to work with the Indians, and in 1836, he was named "Armourer" for the agency at St. Peters in Mendota. He earned a salary of $360 per year to start; his salary when up to $600 per year because of his ability to repair guns as well as his usual blacksmith duties. There were seven Indian villages under his supervision at this time; Wabasha, Red Wing, Little Crow, Old Black Dog, Old Pinishon, Sikz, Purcelin Lake, and Calvon Lake. He moved from village to village repairing knives and rifles. He was also making traps and other tools that the Indians needed.

Oliver married Sarah Mary "Sally" Graham, daughter of Captain Duncan Graham and Susanne Istagiwin Ha-za-ho-ta-win Pennishon, on October 4, 1831 at Mendota, MN. This union resulted in the birth of three girls and one boy.

On August 16, 1837, he signed a petition to the president of the United States for restitution for lands that they settled between St. Anthony falls and the mouth of the Minnesota River. These lands were to be taken for military reserve.

On July 10, 1839, Oliver was officially transferred to the Wabasha area as a Blacksmith. He built a shop and then a house on the banks of the Mississippi River. This area became known as Cratte's Landing until the town was officially named Wabasha in 1843.

Oliver's wife, Sarah, died about 1841. After her death, he married Teresa Rocque about 1843 at Wabasha, MN. She is the daugher of Augustine Rocque. She died in childbirth within one year of their marriage.

Oliver married Harriet Jane "Jenny" Campbell, daughter of Duncan and Josephine "Therese" Campbell on April 17, 1846 at Lake Pepin, MN. They had 15 children.

Oliver was elected to the first Board of Commissioners for Wabasha County on October 11, 1853. He served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for Wabasha County in 1854 and 1855. He and Joseph Buisson created the original town plat for the town of Wabasha, MN in July of 1854.

Oliver and his family were living in Wabasha between 1850 and 1880. He owned a sizable portion of land in the area. He placed all of his land in a land association. He was an honest man and never reaped the profits of this association, and ended up with nothing. As he grew older, he was nearly blind and poor.

He was very active in the Catholic Church. Father Trobec introduced him as "one of the best Catholics" in his parish.

Etienne Olivier "Oliver" Cratte (Crête) Sr. died on April 22, 1884 at Wabasha, MN at age 82. He was buried on April 24, 1884 at St. Felix Cemetery, Wabasha, MN.
