LUCILLE BATTIN
May 19, 1925 - Jan. 17, 2010

SALEM - Our beloved mother, Lucille Battin, passed away at age 84 on January 17, 2010. Lucille was born in WaKeeney, Kansas to Emanuel G. Pavey and Lulu M. (Coe) Pavey, the youngest of three children (Francis "Frank", Glenn and Lucille). The family moved to Oregon in 1936 in the midst of the Great Depression and settled in Salem. She graduated from Salem High School in 1943.

Lucille married her high school sweetheart, GERALD D. (Red) WATSON in 1944. Lucille and Red were blessed with two children, Gerald G. (Jerry) and Michael G. (Mike) Watson. Red and Lucille, and Lucille's brother Frank, started a successful small business in Salem, the Sunset Donut Company. Red passed away in 1950 at a young age from a heart condition, leaving Lucille with two small children.

Following Red's death, Lucille and her sons lived with Lucille's mother, until 1955 when Lucille married CHARLES S. (Chuck) BATTIN. A year later Lucille and Chuck became the proud parents of twins, when Robert C. (Bob) and Kathleen J. (Kathy) Battin were born.

Except for a year spent in Albany, the family resided in Salem, where Lucille was a devoted mother, homemaker, Sunday school teacher, wife and friend. As the children grew older she worked as a bookkeeper and eventually established her own tax preparation business.

In later years, after Chuck retired from Prudential Insurance Company, Chuck and Lucille enjoyed traveling to visit children, grandchildren and friends. They took pleasure in trips to Colorado, Florida, California, Nevada, New York, Washington D.C and Europe. In 2000, Lucille traveled to Brazil and in 2005 took a cruise to Alaska with family.

Lucille and Chuck were married for more than 40 years until Chuck passed away in 1996.

Lucille was a long-time member of Salem First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school to the four and five-year old children for more than fifty years. Lucille loved children (her own and others) and was extremely proud of and grateful for the opportunity to teach little children. Her life was one of service and she quietly, graciously and lovingly enriched the lives of all those around her. She was a life-time member of Eastern Star, served as secretary for the Grant Neighborhood Association for many years, and volunteered in service organizations throughout Salem.

In addition to family and friends, Lucille's great joys in life included dancing to Big Band music and fishing off Detroit dam.

Lucille is survived by her children, Jerry Watson (Diane) and Mike Watson (Mary) of Keizer, Kathy Cunha (Tony) of Salem, and Bob Battin (Pam) of Silverdale, Washington. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, and husbands.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 22 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem. Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 23 at First Christian Church, Salem, followed by a graveside interment at Belcrest Memorial Park. A reception will be held at her home following interment. Contributions may be made in her name to First Christian Church, 685 Marion St. N.E., Salem, or to Union Gospel Mission, 345 Commercial St. N.E., Salem.
