John Bartol grew up in Morristown, NJ. Entering Princeton from Exeter in the summer of 1944, he graduated in 1949. After graduating as a Law Review editor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1952, he practiced law in Philadelphia as an associate and then as a partner of Pepper, Hamilton & Scheerz. He withdrew in 1969 to go into practice for himself and then in association with OberMeyer, Rebmann, Maxwell and Hippel. In 1977, John moved his family to Carefree, Arizona, where he expanded the career he had begun as a successful lawyer turned "venture capitalist." While serving, until his death, as a director of Hunt Manufacturing Co. (a family-owned business in Philadelphia), he founded and chaired the boards of Camelback Capital Corp. in Mesa, Ariz., and Rockford Corp., in Tempe, and he was on the board of several other ongoing concerns in Utah and Arizona. Instrumental in incorporating Carefree as a town, he was a town councilman from 1984 to 1989, and gave generously of his time to civic and charitable organizations. John was married in 1951 to Caroline Schiller, who survives him, along with his sister Joyce de Koslowski. He took great pride in his six children, Nicholas, Timothy, Pamela, Anne, Mary, and Rebecca, and four young grandchildren, all of whom survive. John was "primarily known among his friends, relatives, and colleagues for his intelligence, integrity, wit, warmth, and personal strength, caring deeply for his family, business and community affairs, and taking responsibility and providing detailed, thoughtful leadership." He died of cancer Nov. 10, 1992, at his home in Carefree.
