Thelma Elizabeth Cooper Bontz
BLACKWELL -- Thelma Elizabeth Cooper Bontz, resident of Blackwell, died Wednesday morning, April 21, 2004, in her home. She was 95.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Nardin under the direction of Roberts and Son Funeral Home. Visitation with family will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Thelma Elizabeth Cooper Bontz was born Jan. 27, 1909, in Belle Plaine, Kan., the daughter of Hugh and Rene Hatfield Cooper. She grew up on a farm west of Blackwell, attending Cooper School and Blackwell High School and graduating in 1928.
She married Joe H. Bontz on March 16, 1935, in Enid, and they farmed northwest of Nardin until 1982, when they moved to Blackwell. She served as postmistress in Nardin for several years.
She was a member of the Blackwell chapter 51 of Eastern star and served as worthy matron in the Nardin chapter. She received a 50-year pin in 1995. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Blackwell.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Barbara Jean Hendrix of Florissant, Mo., and Marilee Wardlow of Blackwell; a son, Gordon Dean Bontz of the Fairchild Center in Billings; a brother, Kenneth Cooper of Muskogee; a sister, Lorene Lagrone of Blackwell; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Casket bearers will Leslie Wardlow, Mel Hendrix, Jim Ring, Leon Bontz, Keith Benck and Jacob Andrews.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Kay County Shrine Club-Transportation Fund, or Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 West Padon, Blackwell, Okla. 74631.
