Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He enlisted at the age of 18, but said he was 20. He joined Capt. William P Moore's Company, Folk'sBattalion, North Carolina Cavalry on July 5, 1862. On July 6, 1863 he transferred to Company F, 65th Regiment, North Carolina Troops, 6th Cavalry. He was captured at Jackson Mills, near Kinston, North Carolina on June 22, 1864 and held prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was paroled on March 14, 1865 and turned over to Confederate Agents for exchange at Boulware's Wharf, James River,Virginia.

After the birth of their first child in 1869, William and Parthenia moved, in a covered wagon, to Texas and settled near Waco in what was called'Cow Creek' or 'Whitehall Community'. In 1880 they moved near Mart, in the Vernal community. After 1910 they moved to Plainview, Hale County, Texas. In 1915 they moved to Krum, Denton County, Texas. In 1917 they settled near Gunter in Grayson County, Texas.
