WALLA WALLA - Eugene Donald John (Crow Leggens) Aa' Thon, 76, of Pendleton died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in Walla Walla. A dressing service was held at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 at the Agency Longhouse in Mission, followed by a Washat service. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Lapwai Methodist Church in Lapwai, Idaho. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Little Nespelem Cemetery in Nespelem, Wash.

Mr. John was born Jan. 28, 1933, in Spalding, Idaho, to Phillip and Elizabeth (McCormack) John. He and his siblings, Carmelita and Dunbar, were raised in the Yakima area. He was an enrolled member of the Yakima Nation and the Nez Perce Tribe, and a direct descendent of Chief Joseph. When he was young he lived with his father, helping him with cattle in the mountains of Potato Hill within the Yakima Indian Reservation. He moved to Lapwai, Idaho, and attended school at Spalding, Idaho.

At about age 17, he was hired by Potlatch Forest Inc. at Lewiston, Idaho, where he worked for about a year. He joined the Army in 1951, and fought during the Korean Conflict. After serving in the military, he returned home to Lapwai and had two children.

He worked for Idaho Pine Lumber Co. at White Bird, Idaho, as a resaw operator for about six months in 1964. He then moved to Pendleton, where he worked for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation as a groundskeeper at the golf course. He also taught the Nez Perce language for several years. He married Marcia Agapith in 1994 in Walla Walla.

Mr. John is survived by the love of his life, Marcia John; daughter Marilee Holt of California; stepson Johnnie Abbott; two granddaughters; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Carmelita John; half sister Lilly Leona Lott; son Eugene Donald John Jr.; and grandson Douglas Holt.
