Ernest J. Miller, 97, of Annapolis, died Jan. 17 at his residence.

He was born June 5, 1912, in Davidsonville, to the late Peter J. and Barbara Miller. On Sept. 28, 1935 he married Gertrude A. Grierson in St. Mary's Catholic Church. They have been married for 74 years.

He worked at Chance's Boat Yard and Trumphy's building boats. In 1941 he went to work at E.E. Station and was a diesel engineer. He then went to work for J.F. Johnson Lumber Company and retired in 1975 after 26 years. He was a mechanic, a jack of all trades, drove trucks and worked in the mill.

His hobbies were airplanes. In 1956 he bought a piper cub that he rebuilt and kept at Lee Airport. He also loved his family, taking care of his yard, working puzzles and boats.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter Miller, Nick Miller and Frank Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Miller; six children, Thomas John Miller of Rhodesdale, Ernest J. Miller Jr. of Ocean City and Annapolis, Paul Francis Miller of Destin, Fla., Robert Allen Miller of Rhodesdale, Barbara Christina White of Arnold and Patricia Ann Hall of Lothian; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends called at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis. Interment was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
