He was first married to Elizabeth Brockett on Feb. 15, 1843, in Westmoreland. She died on Jan. 20, 1856, in Westmoreland. They had three children, Maurice Abial, Nathan Brockett and Mary Elizabeth Graves.
He married second, Alzina Mott in 1869. They had two children, Hannah Elizabeth and Benjamin Stark Graves.

Abial S. Graves, a veteran of the Civil War and a well-known and respected resident of this town, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Friday at his home on the Mexico road, five miles west of this village. He had been in feeble health for the past two or three years but did not take to his bed until three days before his demise. Death is attributed to old age, as on January 2d he quietly observed his 83d birthday anniversary.
Mr. Graves was born in Westmoreland, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Graves. His boyhood days were spent in his native town, but at the age of fourteen years his ambitious and enterprising disposition led him to Whitesboro, where he accepted a clerkship in his brother's store. After a time he went to Utica and was engaged in a similar position with the firm of Matthews & Wilcox. When the rebellion broke out he was one of the brave men who responded to the Union's call, and enlisting in the 81st Regiment, Co. 1, N.Y.V., he served three years. After being granted an honorable discharge he returned to his native town, and shortly after came to Camden. He settled and has since lived in the vicinity where he died, having devoted his time to farming.
Twice had Mr. Graves been married, his first wife being a Miss Brockett. His second wife, who survives was Miss Alzina Mott of the town of Lee. Their marriage occurred at Westmoreland on his return from the war.
There also survive to mourn his loss five children, who are Maurice Graves of Syracuse, Nathan F. Graves of Redwood, Cal., and Nellie K., wife of Rev. Frank Strong, late of Bay City, Mich., Elizabeth H., wife of A. G. Blowers of Deansboro, and Benjamin S. Graves, who resides at home. The first three mentioned were by his former marriage. A brother, Sterling P. Graves of Westmoreland, also remains.
The funeral was held Sunday at 10 a.m. from his late home, Rev. L.L. Davy of Amboy Center, officiating. A delegation of the veterans of J. Parsons Stone Post of this village, of which deceased was a member, attended in a body. The bearers were Commander W. W. Elden, William Miller, Charles Blanchard, W. R. Towle, J. W. Roberts, Edward J. Piersall and Dr. Hiram Cain. The remains were placed in the receiving vault at Forest Park cemetery. Camden Advance-Journal, Thursday, February 9, 1905
