CHAZY — Maynard R. Vassar, 86, of the Ridge Road died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home.
He was born in Sciota on July 29, 1922, the son of Gerald and Faye (Dragon) Vassar.
Mr. Vassar was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Chazy and a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Mooers. He married the former Ada Paro in Chazy in 1942.
Mr. Vassar worked in the mines at Lyon Mountain before WWII, and during the war he worked at Pratt Whitney in Connecticut. Following the war, he worked at the Miner Farm in Chazy and later at Velan Steam and Valve Co. in Plattsburgh until retiring, in 1976.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Gregory, and his fiancé, Vicki Tomkiewicz of West Chazy; one daughter, Gretchen LaDue, and her husband, Orville of Chazy; two sisters, Vivian Glennon of Chateaugay, N.Y., and Patricia Stacy of West Chazy; one daughter-in-law, Norma Vassar of West Chazy; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Daniel Vassar; three brothers, Ross, Norman and Calvin; and two sisters, Pauline Vassar and Geraldine Trudell, all died earlier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
Burial will be in West Chazy Rural Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the R. W. Walker Funeral, 69 Court St., Plattsburgh.
