William J. Thoreson (Bill) passed away March 3, 2009 in Grand Forks, ND.

Bill was born on December 17, 1919 to Carl and Elizabeth (Cochran) Thoreson in York, ND. He graduated from York High School in 1939 and went on to the University of North Dakota. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 3 1/2 years. In 1942 he married Ruth Carlson and together they raised five children in York, ND.

Bill's ties to North Dakota and the land were strong and well-lived. He farmed with his father and eventually owned and managed the family farm. In 1946 he took over the Thoreson grain buying business. Throughout his career he operated grain elevators in York, Leeds and Hong. As an active community member he served over 20 years on the Leeds/York school board. He also served in the North Dakota State Senate during the 1969 and 1971 legislative sessions. Other community and church involvement included York Lutheran Church, the American Legion, North Dakota Farmers Grain Dealers' Association, Shrine and V.F.W. to name a few.

After retirement, "Grandpa Bill" spent much of his time in warmer climates making many road trips from Arizona to North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Washington and California to visit family and friends.

Survivors include: five children, Carl Thoreson (Marilyn) of Mears, MI, Elizabeth Tufte (Erling) of Woodbury, MN, Anne Thoreson of Bozeman, MT, John Thoreson (Denise) of Shishmaref, AK and York, ND, William Thoreson (Shelly) of East Grand Forks, MN; sister, Lois Kowski residing in Santa Fe, NM; Grandchildren, John (Kari A.) Tufte and Kari E. (Mike) Lind, Sarah, Emily and Andrea Thoreson, Eric and Rebecca Thoreson, Jesse and Jerome Tufte; Great grandchildren, Olivia and Leif Tufte, Erik and Sonja Lind, and Elle Johnson.

Services: A memorial service is being planned for late spring in York, ND.
