Mrs. Gurwell operated the College Inn restaurant in Highland for a few years, and she later was an office manager for the shipping and receiving department in a metal fabrication factory at Paramount, Calif., for nearly 20 years.
She was born Oct. 24, 1924, west of White Cloud, the daughter of Edgar and Ruby Hopper Rosenberger. She attended school in Highland and graduated from White Cloud High School in 1943. She attended Platte-Guard business College in St. Joseph, Mo. She moved to California in the early 1960s, and then she returned to Highland in 1994.
Mrs. Gurwell was a member of Calvary Chapel of St. Joseph, and the Order of Eastern Star. She was a former member of the ladies auxiliary to Post No. 154 of the American Legion in White Cloud.
She married Roy Willard Gurwell in November 1944 at Troy. They were divorced.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Renee Mulligan, Highland; a son, Scott Gurwell, Highland; a sister, Betty Dunn, Highland; a brother, Gerald "Fed" Rosenberger, Severance; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland.
Inurnment will be at a later date at the Highland Cemetery.
Mrs. Gurwell will lie in state after 10 a.m. today at the funeral chapel, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Barbara Gurwell Memorial Fund to be designated later and sent in care of the funeral home.
