Son of John McCamey Wilson and Catherine Josephine "Josie" (Zellner) Wilson, John Marion was one of eighteen children. He was named after his father, John Wilson, and grandfather, Marion Zellner. Married to Inez Zellner on 17 January 1895.

After the death of Inez (Zellner) Wilson in 1916, he married a widow, Mrs. Virginia A. "Virgie" (Funk) Wirt (1880-1953) on 18 September 1919 in Shelby County, TN.
