-- John Calvin Gladden, 70, died Monday morning at the veterans Hospital in Columbia after an illness of several years. Mr. Gladden was a native of Chester, son of the late Henry and Bessie McKeown Gladden. He operated Gladdens Grocery Store for a number of years before his retirement due to ill health, and was a member of the First Baptist Church and a Veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Annie Elliot; one daughter Mrs. Steve McCord of North Wilkesboro N. C.; three brothers Wilson Gladden, James T Gladden both of Chester, Mayo Gladden of Tampa. Fla.; three sisters, Miss Estelle Gladden, Miss Hennie Gladden both of Chester and Mrs. Maude Drennan Of Richburg and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of Barron Funeral Home with the Rev. William R. Bussey officiating, assisted by Rev. A. Plexico. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Floyd Elliott, Frazier Grant, Tom Elliott Jr., Lindsay Grant, Wylie Sugart, and John C. Elliott. Honorary pallbearers was Dr. Marion Lynn L. C. Horner, Glenn Gallman, Joe H. Sanders W. A. Foote. Moffatt White, Dr. W. R. Wallace, Hoyt Hendricks, R. W. Coleman Sr., Dr. W. K. Magill, Charlton Howze, Clyde Carter, C. W. McTeer, Jake Colvin, H. M. Tharington, and representative group from Masons and Legions.
