The Rev. Lindell Linton "Lindy" Sawyers, 84, of the Presbyterian Village in Summerville, SC, died Thursday, September 3, 2009.

He was the son of D. Clarence Linton and Lucille Beatrice Reno. Born Lindell Leon Linton, he changed his name in 1946 to Lindell Linton Sawyers in honor of his stepfather William J. Sawyers.

Lindy served in the U. S. Army Infantry in World War II, fighting in the Battles of the Bulge, Ruhr, and Remage Bridge.

Lindy attended Columbia University in New York and the University of Chicago where he obtained an Ed.D, Master A&E, DB of Divinity. He was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church in 1954.

Rev.Sawyers devised an approach to leadership development called "Project EQUIP" in 1970 and held training workshops in more than 20 states. The Equip workshop design is available in a multi-media packet form, published by Geneva Press, Philadelphia. He was author of the book, "One People of God"

On 11 June 1952, he was united in marriage to Ruth Elizabeth Lowry and she preceded him in death on 1 September 1987. They had adopted two children, Rebecca Shea Sawyers-Smith, and Andrew Linton Sawyers. Rebecca, deceased, gave him two grandchildren, Rene Lynne Smith and Shannon Rae Smith, whom he adored.

On 5 March 1989, he married Anne Manson Jenkins and she preceded him in death 17 January 2003.

Lindy was a sweet and kind soul loved by all who knew him. He loved to sing and led group sing-a-longs at the Presbyterian Village where he lived in Summerville, South Carolina. Lindy had been a member of the Choir and led a course of Bible studies at the home.

Memorial Services were held Monday afternoon, September 14, 2009 at the Chapel at the Village at Summerville, Presbyterian Communities of SC at 2 o'clock. Burial followed in Johns Island Presbyterian churchyard where he was buried beside his wife Anne in the Jenkins Family Plot.
