William grew up in the Cross Plains area.In 1869 he married Isabel Frances "Fannie" Roberts of that community. They lived in Nolan County a few years before coming back to Cottonwood to raise their 13 children: James Willie, Emsley Levi & John E were twins (John died at a very young age), Leonard Monroe, Melvin G., Richard Harvey, Cavin Leslie, Oliver, Ida, Urias "Bud", Lela & Homer.
