Austin Gore Lowry was born in Fayette County , Alabama to Christopher Lowry (1780-1853) and Susannah Carroll (1849-1830), He was married to Josephine McCool in 1857. She died in 1859. By 1860 he married Mary Elizabeth Perkins, daughter of Moses Perkins and Isabella Richards., who were very wealthy Alabama landowners. Austin and his wife and family moved to Attala County, Mississippi where they purchased a large cotton plantation. His children and hired help ran the plantation due to the war. Austin fought nearly all through the Civil War at the Battle of Chickamauga and was injured and left for dead, somehow surviving, it was said that he was in Lee's Army when General Lee surrendered at Appomatox Courthouse. All the children went to school until the 8th grade , then worked hard on the plantation picking cotton and harvesting wheat and caring for family. The children born to Austin and Mary Perkins were Martha Ann Lowry Tims, Nan Elizabeth Lowry Ayres, Josiah Frank Lowry, Savannah J. Lowry, and Mollie Matilda Lowry Cross.
