The following information was provided by Brian Lankford:

Susan Angelina(Bates)Langford was born August 17, 1828 to Elizabeth Craig Veatch and Lewis Bates. The Veatch family lived in Harrison County, Indiana near New Albany. Lewis Bates died of cholera in 1833 and Elizabeth (Veatch) Bates followed several relatives to Spencer County, Indiana. Elizabeth married William McAfee Jones on April 18, 1844. They lived in Grass Township, Spencer County, Indiana near the James Lankford family. William S. Langford and Susan A. Bates were married on November 10, 1846 in Spencer County, Indiana. William was the son of James and Jane Lankford and was born about 1826. James Lankford was considered the first white settler who lived in a cave in the present-day town of Rockport, Spencer County, Indiana beginning in 1808. Susan Angelina (Bates) Langford and William S. Langford had six children: John J., Cyrus Bates, Lucinda Elizabeth Jane, Florence Emma, William Barker & Martha Helen "Mattie".

William S. Langford served as a Captain in the 53rd Regiment, Company I, Indiana Infantry. He enlisted on October 30, 1861 and submitted his resignation on July 17, 1864 because his wife had passed away and he had five small children to raise. He was honorably discharged.

He took four of the five children (John J. Langford remained in Boonville, IN) and moved to the Shaker community at South Union, Kentucky where he and the children remained until the children became of age.

William S. Langford died January 15, 1884 in Grenada, Mississippi and his body was brought back to Boonville, IN for burial in the Old Boonville Cemetery
