OLATHE - J. Paul Jewell, 80, of Olathe, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Olathe Medical Center. He was born May 29, 1922, at Arcadia.
He had lived in Kansas City, Kan., for 54 years before moving to Olathe in 2001.
He received a bachelor of arts degree in social science and a master's degree in economics from Pittsburg State University.
On Aug. 10, 1947, he married Fern I. Watkins. She survives of the home.
He served in the Pacific during World War II. He had been a teacher for more than 40 years before retiring as professor emeritus from Kansas City, Kan., Community College in 1988. He was named to the Education Hall of Fame and was named Outstanding Educator of Kansas.
He wrote the History of Kansas City, Kan., Community College in 1996.
He was a member and a former chairman of the board of trustees at McPherson College. The J. Paul Jewell Student Center at Kansas City, Kan., Community College was named in his honor.
He was a member, deacon and steward of First Central Church of the Brethren and taught the Bible class for 39 years. He sang in the choir for 41 years.
Additional survivors include two sisters, Betty Dehon, of Nevada, Mo., and Donna Cooley, of Hesperia, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Central Church of the Brethren, 103 N. 13th St., Kansas City, Kan. Burial will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Forest Hill Cemetery, Arcadia. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at George F. Porter & Sons Funeral Home, Kansas City, Kan., which is handling arrangements.
