Samuel Vittitoe and his wife Ellen moved from Kentucky to Grayson County, Texas and in January of 1852 they purchased three hundred and sixty six acres of land from Enoch M Jones. It is believed that the undated headstone of their son Frank marks the first grave in the family plot that became the public Vittitoe Cemetery 25 years later.
The four undated stones that sit in a row are Ellen, Frank, Samuel and Black Mammie. Samuel's estate was probated in 1862 and Frank was not listed among the heirs, nor was he with the family in the 1860 census. So it is assumed that his burial was prior to 1860.
Ellen died prior to September 1884, when her daughter, Prudence sold Sixty Six acres of the family land to John E Turner. Prudence died 4 months later and was laid to rest west of her parents and brother, Frank.
The Vittitoes had welcomed other burials in their family cemetery but there are no markers to indicate any non family burials prior to 1885.
Remaining heir, Quincy Vittitoe took steps to assure that the cemetery was legally established as a public burial ground and in April of 1885, Mr Turner sold the acre of land encompassing the burials to the "Trustees of the Graveyard: Quincy Vittitoe, D L Lollar and James Bray."
Seventeen year old, Lavander Davis who died May 19, 1885 is the first known non family burial. The second is fifteen month old, Mack Epperson who died on September 6, 1885.
