JOHNSON S. MATTINGLY SR., FORMER LEGISLATOR, DIES AT 87
Johnson S. Mattingly Sr., 87, a state representative in the '30's, died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday [March 13, 1980] at Suburban Hospital. He lived at 3527 Graham Road and owned and operated Southern Catholic Supply Inc. for 25 years. Mattingly, a native of Bardstown, also served seven years as state athletic commissioner in the administration of Gov. A.B. "Happy" Chandler. He was an honorary member of Knights of Columbus, Bishop Spalding Council; a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus; and a past president of Downtown Optimist Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Wyla Allison; a daughter, Sara Bamberger; three sons, Dr. Edward H. Mattingly of Memphis, TN, Johnson S. Mattingly Jr. of Little Rock, AR, and George R. Mattingly; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 2141 Lancashire Ave., with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation at Ratterman's, 3800 Bardstown Road, will be from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Boys Haven or a favorite charity.
