Harvey had three brothers and two sisters. He moved from Reeds, Missouri to Hutchinson, Kansas in 1915 and worked in the salt mines during the early years of his life. Later, he began farming in the sand hills north of Hutchinson. He married Ritta Ann Vetter II in June of 1915 in Carthage, MO. They had seven children.
