Annie was born August 11, 1935, in Brunswick County, NC, the daughter of the late Samuel Claude Varnam and Bertha Florence Hewett Varnam. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Marie Varnam; and six brothers; and three sisters.
Annie was a member of Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church. She had operated her own commercial fishing business and for many years she was the president of the Save Our Shellfish Organization. Annie had also been a volunteer in the Coastline Volunteer Rescue Squad at Holden Beach.
Annie is survived by her husband, Donald Martin Smigiel, Sr.; four sons, Gary and Mary Jacobs of Winnabow, Donald M. Jr. and Jacqueline Smigiel of Supply, Alan and Julie Smigiel of Fayetteville, Kenneth and Carolyn Smigiel of Supply; a daughter, Donna and Kenyon Smith of Shallotte; three brothers, Ralph and Beatrice Varnam, ONeal and Virginia Varnam, Herbert Midget and Jeanette Varnam; and a sister, Eula Mae and Rev. R.C. Dixon. Annie is also survived by 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, Annie was also a foster grandmother to many children.
The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Monday at the Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church in Varnamtown where funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday with Rev. Benjamin Horton and Rev. Jeanne Ray officiating.
Burial will follow in the Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
